How Design and Friendship Combined in a Feminist Friendship! – Curious Twist

Less bitchin', more stitchin': How Design and Friendship Combined in a Feminist Friendship!

UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN LIVING UNDER A VERY LARGE ROCK WITH NO SOCIAL MEDIA ACCESS, YOU’LL HAVE NOTICED ME PLUGGING THE NEWEST CURIOUS TWIST MERCH: A MUG TO SMASH BACK YOUR CAFFEINE, A TOTE BAG TO CART ABOUT ALL YOUR STITCHING SHIT, AND A PIN TO DECORATE YOUR…. WELL, ANYTHING.

Each has on a great design: a hand-drawn tattoo type design that’s bright, bold and beautiful. As much as I’d love to be a good enough artist to produce something like this, it’s the work of Charlotte, who you can check out on Instagram at @peaches.and.mint! You might recognise her style – she designed the Curious Twist logo too!

Charlotte is a long-term Curious Twist customer and full-time fierce babe, and now I count her as a firm friend. And while I’m here and I have your attention, I want to take a few sentences to reflect on what a fucking fantastic human she is, and how glad I am we’ve connected. A Liverpool-based (just down the road from me, in fact) creative, she is insanely talented and a really kind person to boot, but something that we speak about often is feminism.

Charlotte is just a year older than my daughter, so it may seem like a bit of an unusual friendship that we’ve struck, but as women, and creative, badass women trying to navigate the world, we’ve found a lot in common. I’m almost twice Charlotte’s age, but we’re both in our infancy when it comes to learning about and fighting for equality on feminist issues. I have spent my whole life with a conscious awareness of what has been (and often still is) expected of me as a woman in society.

What I’ve wanted, and want, to do in life hasn’t always matched up with those expectations; and it’s only now that I’m starting to answer back and undo all of the bullshit that I’ve found ingrained in me as a result of living in a patriarchal society. I spent five years in the Royal Navy as a Radio Mechanic back in the days before women were even ‘allowed’ to go to sea… so fuck knows, I’ve experienced misogyny; and had to work with it. Charlotte, however, is growing up in a really exciting time where women are finding their voices and standing up and being counted where it matters. That said, she too has experienced lots of conditioning and oppression that makes her second-guess herself at times and has affected her sense of self. Things are changing, but the world’s not there yet.

One of our favourite pastimes now is picking apart all of the ‘norms’ we’ve come to accept as women without questioning; even though they’ve sometimes felt like shit. We’re surprisingly similar in this respect, despite the age gap and all of our idiosyncrasies. Perhaps we’re both ‘nasty women’, or perhaps that label is bollocks. Either way, it’s been really interesting for me to explore some of my own prejudices and opinions, and to educate myself on other viewpoints and new ideas.

I’m hugely proud of Charlotte for many different things, including for drawing these incredible designs for Curious Twist, which I’m super grateful for. Hey, I loved them so much that I’m sharing them with all of you! What’s more, I love her designs so much I got one needled into my skin for all eternity as my latest tattoo. That’s some fucking appreciation, eh?

I don’t know how long it’ll take humanity to wake the fuck up and realise that feminism, equality and diversity are beautiful things. What I do know is that women should support and empower each other.

Who do you want to celebrate today? Whoever it is, tell them they’re fucking great, and then tell someone else, too. Encourage, extol, enjoy and empower – there’s so much to be gained from it.

Melody xx
